A Healthier Stuffed Bread Recipe

Stuffed bread is a delicious dish for lunch, dinner or for tea time! This recipe is quite healthy, plus versatile because you can use lots of different options for stuffings including chicken, fish, vegetables or any leftovers!

You can involve the children in making this stuffed bread since the steps are super easy. They take ownership and will definitely eat better!

I used Shireen Anwar’s chicken bread recipe but modified it to be healthier by using oats flour and a few other changes along with lots of options for stuffings besides just chicken.

Stuffed Bread Recipe

Ingredients for the bread

Oats flour: 2 cups

All purpose flour: 2 cups

Instant yeast: 1 tablespoon

Milk: 1/2 cup

Salt: 1 teaspoon

Sugar: 1 teaspoon

Egg: 1 + 1

Hemp seeds: 2 tablespoon

Ajwain: 1 tablespoon

Oil: 4 tablespoon

  • I make oats flour at home by grinding oats.
  • Mix together oats flour, all purpose flour, yeast, salt, sugar, ajwain seeds and hemp seeds in a bowl.
  • Now crack an egg and add in the mix along with the oil.
  • Warm the milk and gradually add in the bowl.
  • Knead well to make the dough. Lots of turns and punches do the trick!
  • Cover and set aside for an hour for the dough to rise.

Stuffing:

You can basically use anything for the stuffing! We used cooked salmon and mixed it with lots of shredded cheese and butter. You can use leftover cooked chicken or cooked vegetables. Add cheese, pizza sauce and butter for flavour.

Assembling and Baking the Stuffed Bread:

After an hour, take out pieces of the dough and spread some plain flour on the working surface. Roll out the dough in a rectangular shape spreading it thin. Place the stuffing in the middle and cut the sides as in the image below with a butter knife.

Now braid the sides to cover the stuffing.

This quantity of the mix will make around four pieces of bread. I let the kids make their own bread. The results aren’t Instagram and Pinterest worthy but involve the children in the process and they love to devour their results.

Before baking brush some egg wash on the bread. Sprinkle some sesame seeds on top if you like.

Bake in a 350F oven for 25 minutes.
