This Back to School season let’s talk to our children about being kind to others. We did a craft to encourage acts of kindness in the first week back using Crayola products and we would love to share that with all of you.

I was always an anxious child and Back to School triggered those anxious feelings more. Therefore, I’m more conscious about this season for my children and also how they treat other children. There are so many firsts: new teachers, new classroom and new friends. For some children there is also a new school. Others are different and worried about being accepted. Grownups can step up and talk to children about being kind to others and treat them like they would like to be treated.
Paper chain for Acts of Kindness for Back to School
This craft encourages some great conversations and is a lovely way to go Back to School with kindness.
What you need:
Crayola Construction Paper
Crayola Markers + Crayons + Pencil Colours
Crayola Scissors
Crayola Glue
How to:
Cut strips of construction paper.
Brain storm with your children and write acts of kindness that the children can choose in the first week of school.
Here are some acts of kindness we included:
- Talk to someone sitting alone
- Play with a new kid
- Encourage someone struggling
- Ask your teacher how you can help
- Write a thank you note to someone who works at the school
- Give a smile to someone
- Include someone new in your group of friends
- Sit with someone who looks sad at lunch time
- Give a compliment to someone
- Invite someone who is alone to play with you
Glue the two ends of each strip making a circle. Make a paper chain by interlinking the paper strips glued in circles.
Below is an example of how it will look:
You can hang this chain in a prominent spot. We hung ours by the door where the kids’ bags are. The children can break a chain every day and choose an act of kindness for the day.
