This has been a project I have been wanting to start for a long time and here it is finally: My first set of Urdu books for kids starting with My First Book of Urdu Alphabets. If you would like to jump directly to the links to buy the book scroll to the bottom of the page.
Firstly, I would like to thankyou for your interest in this book to pass on our beautiful Urdu language to the next generation in loving ways.
My First Book of Urdu Alphabets is a great resource to start the fun journey of teaching your children Urdu and the Urdu alphabets also called the “Haroof-e-Tahaji”. I have designed the book myself and my mother (popularly known as Bibi) has helped me edit it!
Every page has one Urdu alphabet with a description of what it’s called and then how it sounds. There is one example on each page of a word starting with the Urdu letter along with how it sounds in Urdu and an image to go with it. I have tried to pick nouns and words that the children would find interesting along with sounds that will come easy to them. There is also an Urdu sentence to go for every word. This is an example for you to make the page interesting for the child by making observations and try and expand the child’s vocabulary.
The colours and design of the book are meant to attract and engage children. The book is bilingual with both English and Urdu used.
I have designed this book for multiple reads. Every parent knows that a child loves re-reading a book (the familiarity is comforting to them). So the first time you pick the book maybe just sound the letter and the word identified. Then in the second read, try and spot more images and what they are doing. In the third read, expand on the sentences. And in subsequent reads, build stories. Be imaginative.
This book is also designed for multiple ages and to grow with your child. Little ones will just like the bright images. Toddlers will love repeating the sounds and then the words. They can build their vocabulary with the other words and sentences. Older kids will love spotting other images and the words that are hidden. I have added the key for all answers on the last page in case you want to check!
The sentences on every page use every day Urdu words that can help build your child’s Urdu vocabulary. Use them in your life to enforce their learning.
