This homemade hand sanitizer is easy to make at home and a great way to keep kids busy (I have more hacks for that ahead)! I do want to remind everyone that hand sanitizers do not replace hand-washing. Only use a hand sanitizer if you’re somewhere without access to soap and water.
Let us know if you try to make the homemade hand sanitizer at home. We also have a YouTube video in the end.
Homemade Hand Sanitizer Recipe
Take 1/3 aloe vera gel and mix with 2/3 cup rubbing alcohol (make sure it’s 90% or more). An optional step is adding fragrance which you can do by adding any essential oil of your choice such as lavender, lemon, rose etc. We added 8-10 drops of lemon essential oil for a fresh fragrance.
Now place the homemade hand sanitizer in squeezable bottles to use on the go!
If you have an aloe vera plant at home you can also extract the gel from leaves after cutting the edges with a knife. Might need to blend or mash with a fork.
Keeping Kids Busy
Yes, I haven’t forgotten that I promised to share tips on how to keep kids busy. So here you go:
- While a faster way to pass on the homemade hand sanitizer to the squeezable bottles is via a funnel, keep kids busy for a long time by asking them to transfer via a spoon! You’re welcome.
- Decorate the bottles via labels, stickers and washi tape.
- Gift these sanitizer bottles! We live in a neighbourhood with lots of seniors. We left the sanitizer bottles in their mailbox with a note that we are thinking of them in these days of COVID-19.
And here’s a link of our YouTube video making the sanitizer at home. There are lots of bloopers and laughs. We hope you have as much fun watching the video as we had making it!
As an additional resource here is a post with a list of informational shows for kids. We love these shows for their emphasis on science!
