The children and I had an amazing time planting trees with TD at one of their annual TD Tree Days planting events on Saturday, September 14. It was a great opportunity for the children to get their hands dirty, plant trees and see first-hand how green spaces are built while being part of a wonderful group of volunteers.
The program was well-organized with clear directions about where to meet and lots of support to get us started. The kids learned valuable lessons related to planning green spaces, such as what tree species to plant, the correct distance between plantings and the importance of regular watering afterwards. Such experiences are extremely vital for children to have in order for them to respect nature and play their part in nurturing it.
Since 2010, the TD Tree Days program has planted close to 395,000 native trees and shrubs to enhance green spaces across North America while bringing people together to help build healthy and vibrant communities.
Throughout September and October, volunteers will be planting 38,000 trees at over 100 sites across Canada, contributing to TD’s goal to plant 1 million trees by 2030.. We played our part on Saturday, one tree at a time. There were around 55 volunteers at Calgary’s Edworthy Park and we planted close to 450 trees.
There was a lovely spirit of cooperation and joint purpose amongst all the volunteers. I loved how everyone was paying special attention to the little ones and answering their questions.
TD Tree Days is part of The TD Ready Commitment, a multi-year program helping to open doors for a more inclusive and sustainable tomorrow. This campaign provides TD employees, their families and friends, and community, the opportunity to volunteer and care for their local environment in which they live and work.
Anyone in the community can pitch in and experience being part of this wonderful green initiative. What a joy it will be to see these trees grow over the years! The kids can’t wait to go back again and plant new trees while seeing the progress of the ones they planted.
