My local grocery store (Real Canadian Superstore) sells spices required for South Asian/desi cooking. It’s quite a blessing because of the proximity. For the spices that I use a lot in my cooking such as Garam Masala, Zeera (cumin), and Dhaniya (corriander) I like preparing them at home myself. The taste of home-made spices is truly unique and can not match any boxed spices. For garam masala I like to buy the spices whole and grind them myself. The process is simple and the spices smell fresh and amazing.

I made a YouTube video on how to make Garam Masala, Zeera (Cumin) and Dhaniya (Coriander) Powder. Watch it and let me know if you try it!

Sometimes when I’m at the South Asian spices aisle, I get asked by other shoppers interested in Southasian cooking but not from Pakistan/India on which spice to pick. I like to think it’s because of how I look and not how I smell. Out of the options available, “curry powder” always puzzles me: is it Garam Masala or Red chillies? For those who are interested I shared the steps of making the powder at home especially Garam Masala in the video above.

Would you like to learn them? Check out the video and let me know you think! Do remember to keep the spices in airtight containers.

Do you make any spices at home yourself? Would love to read your special family recipes.
